Serves as associate editor of Professional Safety, the association’s monthly journal, contributor to Society Update e-newsletter, and copy editor of the ASSE Weekly member e-mail. Write and edit content, and design page layouts as assigned for Professional Safety. Write, edit and post content as assigned for Society Update, the ASSE website and other ASSE communications channels.
Collaborate with the Professional Safety editor to establish the journal’s production schedule and monitor workflow throughout the production cycle for each issue. This includes decision-making functions related to issue layout/ad placement, tracking copy output/page production, determining press run and coordinating mailing through print vendor. This requires highly developed attention to detail and consistent follow up to meet publishing deadlines.
Write, edit and proofread content for the organization, including news items, articles, blog articles, case studies, interviews and other content as needed for a variety of platforms and channels, including (but not limited to) ASSE’s journal and website. This requires consistently applying the organization’s style, tone, voice and identity guidelines.
Distill various types of information from other sources, including press releases (internal and external), white papers, research articles, and staff- and member-written articles, for publication in ASSE’s member publications.
Design page layouts and other communications materials, and perform basic image editing using standard creative software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite).
Field story pitches and work with the editor and external contacts to develop relevant pitches into viable content for Professional Safety.
Maintain monthly mailing data for annual USPS reporting and update publisher reports regularly to reflect current distribution statistics and demographics. Maintain and distribute other monthly reports as needed.
Collaborate with communications staff to identify content trends and content sources, and to help execute effective content planning.
Apply effective organizational and time management skills to ensure that multiple demands and deadlines are met.
Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Writing, Journalism.
3-5 years’ related experience.
Experience editing academic, science, applied science or technology subject matters.
Association experience a plus.
Understanding of print publication processes.
Strong knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat and Illustrator, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Hands-on experience with a content management system (e.g., WordPress) highly desirable.
Excellent writing and editing skills. Solid design and page layout skills.
Ability to handle multiple projects, detailed and meet deadlines.
Ability to possibly travel to our annual conference and maybe local travel to association meetings and events.
Ability to work M-F during normal business hours.
