The Beer Institute is a national trade association representing the American brewing industry. The organization traces its roots back to the early 1860s and is one of the oldest trade associations in Washington, DC, representing the industry and its issues before Congress and in other public forums across the country. The goal of the Beer Institute is to be unsurpassed in member focus, operational effectiveness, professional expertise and in having a positive effect on Beer through its partnership with members and others.
This high-profile position is responsible for guiding and executing the Beer Institute’s integrated public affairs strategy; driving the industry’s messages to key stakeholders including media, government, member companies and the general public. The ideal candidate will have experience developing integrated public affairs plans, strategies and campaigns that broaden the impact of policy positions, programs and industry reputation.
Create a positive image of the beer industry by creating strategies to promote the positions of the Beer Institute and its members on public policy issues.
Identify and implement public affairs priorities, objectives and strategies; translate the Beer Institute’s goals into measurable results; increase the industry’s profile with the intent of promoting its legislative agenda; and manage the Beer Institute’s proactive and reactive media relations and issues management.
Develop and implement proactive integrated public affairs plan each year to meet the priorities of the Beer Institute (to include social media strategy, messaging on key issues important to the beer industry, public relations and advertising plans and projects).
Oversee organizational response to media inquiries and develop and maintain relationships with journalists covering the beer industry and its issues.
Develop and manage reputation, messaging and other research.
Serve as primary spokesperson to the media and work with the President and CEO on media relations and presentation skills.
Manage crisis communication and instruct staff on appropriate responses.
Measure and communicate the effectiveness of the Beer Institute public affairs strategy and results.
Lead industry working group that includes communicators from member companies.
Bachelor’s degree preferably in Public Affairs/Public Policy, Communication or Journalism.
MBA or Master’s Degree a plus.
At least 10 years experience including at a senior leadership level with managerial and budgeting responsibilities.
Proven ability to develop and execute big picture public affairs and media strategies that lead to results.
Communications role in the administration, Capitol Hill, corporate public affairs or with a trade association.
