Research!America, the nation’s largest not-for-profit advocacy and public education alliance working to make research to improve health a higher national priority, is seeking a creative, highly organized, and energetic communications professional to join the team as Director of Communications. Reporting to the Vice President of Alliance Development, Membership and Communications, the Director of Communications oversees day-to-day communications functions, working with staff across the alliance to develop and execute a range of activities intended to raise awareness of medical and health research issues and Research!America’s mission. The Director supports the Vice President of Alliance Development, Membership and Communications in planning, developing, managing and ensuring successful implementation of engagement strategies, plans and tactics for major events, briefings, and other key projects. The Director collaborates with colleagues across the organization to ensure the production of high-quality materials that support the organization’s mission. The Director develops and maintains highly collaborative and productive relationships with media, policymakers, current and potential members/partners, research professionals, business leaders and others committed to advancing medical and health research.
Lead media outreach and communications activities to support and reinforce Research!America’s brand with the media, influencers and target audiences including press release/statement distribution, and oversight of LTE and op-ed placement.
Provide high-quality writing, supervision and editorial management for Research!America communications.
Lead communications activities for specific Research!America events; write summaries for website, blog and other communications platforms; assist with materials development and on-site support as needed for events and programs.
Lead the maintenance and continuing enhancement of Research!America’s website; assist with social medial engagement.
Manage proactive member communications outreach through various print and electronic vehicles.
Develop presentations for executive speaking engagements; conduct research and draft presentations, remarks and talking points as needed.
Review and edit copy produced by other departments and member organizations for message consistency when applicable.
Manage appropriate use of organization’s editorial and branding guidelines.
Manage the work of contractors/outside vendors when applicable.
Supervise Senior Manager of Communications and Communications Specialist.

Minimum of eight years’ experience in a communications-related environment
Bachelor’s degree in journalism/communications, public relations, political science or a related field
Strong expertise in developing and maintaining highly collaborative and productive relationships with national and local media (print, broadcast, digital and social), policy makers, current and potential alliance members/partners, research professionals, business leaders and others committed to advancing medical and health research
Strong experience in developing communication and engagement strategies, plans and tactics for major events, briefings and other key projects
Knowledge of marketing, advertising, and promotional communications
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining focus on high-level organizational goals.
Superb interpersonal skills with experience motivating, coaching, and developing high-performing teams.
Excellent writing, editing and oral communications skills, as well as adherence to style guides and Web usability guidelines.
Experience in a scientific or medical related institution, association preferred
Website management experience
Proficient in social media strategies
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, HTML, Web content management system software, Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator, Dreamweaver), Quark
