We are looking for an experienced finance director or chief financial officer (CFO) with strong skills in nonprofit accounting, budgeting and financial analysis, risk management, and continuous improvement to lead and manage our organization’s finance department. A successful candidate is a strategic financial leader with strong abilities to lead from the balcony as well as manage the day to day accounting and bookkeeping operations. This role reports to the CEO and acts as a key member of the senior leadership team.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic Leadership
Collaborate with CEO and senior leadership team to steward and align resources with organizational priorities and goals.
Present monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements to senior leaders and board of directors.
Promote Philanthropy Northwest’s mission, vision and values to external and internal stakeholders.
Financial Analysis & Forecasting
Analyze finances and create ongoing and real time forecasts for CEO and leadership team to communicate financial realities and opportunities.
Lead and manage the annual budgeting and planning process including updating the organization’s business plan as needed.
Oversee the accounting function and internal controls from monthly general ledger close to transactional processing (AR, AP, and payroll), cash flow, and financial statement preparation and reporting; oversee all accounting for our internal consulting practice, including consulting contractor payments, client invoicing, and reporting.
Assist with preparation of proposals for grants/funding and oversee grants accounting.
Supervise a full-charge bookkeeper and ensure they are meeting performance expectations and work deliverables.
Oversee the annual audit process.
Ensure compliance with federal, state and local legal requirements by researching existing and new legislation, consulting with outside advisors, and filing financial reports. Manage and update all required business licensing.
Protect all financial resources and assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls.
Minimum of seven to ten years senior-level financial leadership and accounting management. Experience in nonprofit accounting required.
Strong working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for nonprofit organizations and basic understanding of local, state, and federal tax laws pertinent to nonprofits.
Experience with network applications and integrated accounting systems; experience with Abila MIP Fund Accounting system required. Experience with Microix budgeting a plus. Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
Strong skills and experience with financial analysis and forecasting.
Comfort with ambiguity and change, and eagerness to continually improve finance systems.
Robust business acumen with ability to bring keen understanding of costs, benefits and risks analysis to business dilemmas, opportunities, or situations.
CPA and/or CFA certification desirable.
Ability to lead, develop and mentor staff in an inclusive intercultural environment where staff of all backgrounds and abilities can thrive.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to manage relationships with integrity and consistency, including a keen ability to work effectively and respectfully with politically, ideologically, culturally and geographically diverse people and communities.
Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively.
