As the Vice President of Communications and Marketing, you will report to the Chief Operating Officer, lead a team of eight, and provide the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) with strategic leadership, planning, and execution for our communications, marketing, and publications. Working with the management team, you will be responsible for conceiving, developing, implementing, and integrating a broad range of communications, public relations, social/digital, and content marketing activities in support of AAMI’s strategic plan.
In this role, you will enhance member engagement by modernizing both our communications and marketing efforts, expanding our focus to include both the creation of high-value content and a more coordinated and robust means of disseminating content across our portfolio and improving overall product strategy and positioning. You will play a crucial role in cultivating and advancing the public voice of AAMI and in building AAMI’s reputation as a respected and authoritative resource in healthcare technology.
AAMI is a unique alliance of 8,000 members from around the world united by one critical mission: increasing the understanding and beneficial use of healthcare technology. We consistently develop new products specifically around new standards and stakeholder needs. AAMI members improve medical device safety through the development and use of AAMI standards, professional certification, education, summits, and other technical resources. Industry, healthcare facilities, government agencies, and others rely on AAMI to disseminate high-quality, objective information that helps to make technology used in the care and treatment of patients safer and more effective.
Responsibilities of the Vice President of Communications & Marketing
Strategic planning. Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications and marketing plan designed to more clearly define AAMI among our key stakeholders, broaden awareness of our programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of programs across relevant audiences.
Prepare and present budgets and strategic plans to the board of directors and other governance committees in all areas of responsibility.
Lead the packaging, framing, and highlighting of AAMI initiatives. Marketing takes the lead role in selling products, but success in this position requires an ability to break down department walls to figure out what to cover and promote and how.
Editorial oversight. Oversee the association’s portfolio of magazines, journals, and other publications, identifying strategies to make them more engaging and useful to membership and the industry.
Oversee all AAMI publishing and communications programs and activities, including print and electronic formats of our journal and its supplements, newsletters, reports, books, videos, standards, and other for-sale products.
Provide editorial guidance to ensure accuracy, engagement, clarity, value, and relevance of all content.
Serve as the editor for all communications coming from the AAMI President.
Ensure that publications and resources comply with publishing and copyright laws.
Partnerships. Cultivate new partners with whom to collaborate on disseminating AAMI information and programming.
Oversee the contractual relationship with the external publishers of AAMI’s journal, BI&T, and our monthly newsletter, AAMI News.
Oversee the development of contracts with vendors and subject matter experts as needed, in coordination with specific editors and, if applicable, outside counsel.
Marketing and communications.
Oversee the strategic development of integrated marketing campaigns to acquire new customers, strengthen partnerships with resellers, improve the overall positioning of our portfolio of products, elevate the AAMI brand, and boost revenue.
Manage an advertising team responsible for generating revenue for the communications department.
Manage the development, execution, and maintenance of an effective and growing social media strategy, including the AAMIBlog.
Manage the development and production of podcasts (working with an outside partner).
Oversee updates and continued improvements to the association website, the public face of AAMI.
Identify and pursue improvements in the use of technology to sharpen how AAMI delivers messages, elevates our profile, and shares content.
Study, track, and analyze online metrics to determine how we can increase our engagement with readers of our digital newsletters and visitors to our website.
Thought leadership. Develop thought leadership platforms for the organization, leveraging members of the executive management team and subject matter experts, as appropriate. Establish and maintain relationships with relevant organizations. Identify and secure key speaking opportunities.
Media relations/public relations. Oversee all aspects of media relations/public relations.
Develop and implement a public relations strategy that gains positive exposure for the organization and our programs and initiatives in the community.
Leverage existing relationships and cultivate new ones with relevant journalists, editorial boards, and other appropriate outlets to generate broader coverage of AAMI’s initiatives around the safety and health of the medical device industry.
Seek pro-active media opportunities and op-ed placements. Facilitate media interviews with appropriate spokespersons and prepare appropriate briefing memoranda, talking points, and Q&A documents.
Provide media coaching and interview training to staff, as appropriate.
Qualifications of the Vice President of Communications & Marketing
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or a related discipline. A master’s degree is a plus.
10 years of experience overseeing communications, marketing, publications, and new business development. Consummate writing, editing, and general communication skills; knowledge of publishing laws. Public relations experience is a plus. Experience with social media, website development, and digital publishing; Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Five years of staff management. Ability to develop and execute strategic business plans. Knowledge of financial management.
Previous experience working in a membership organization environment is preferred. Experience with medical, scientific, or technical publishing and/or knowledge of the peer-review process is preferred.
