POSITION OVERVIEW: This position is responsible for conceiving, developing, and editing several ASEE hard copy and digital products approved by ASEE senior management, including the flagship Society magazine, Prism, and assuring consistently high quality. The person in this position teams, leads, and/or mentors staff and contractors who collaborate with Editorial to provide exceptional benefits to the Society’s membership. ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: • Supervises writing, editing, generation of story ideas, and assignments, including deadlines, for ASEE’s flagship magazine Prism; manages multiple e-newsletters (e.g., Capitol Shorts, ASEE Action, Connections, and the K-12 teachers’ and students’ newsletters). • Develops story schedule for Prism. • Recruits and supervises writers. • Develops and manages an annual budget for Prism and other department activities. • Works with Executive Director in recruiting and coaching columnists. • Recruits and coordinates an Editorial Advisory Board. • Works closely with the Creative Director to integrate art, photography, and text. • Coordinates investigation and enforcement of ASEE’s plagiarism policy for all society publications. • Supervises the work of a deputy editor, assistant editor, and multiple contract writers. • Prepares and/or edits reports, as needed, on government-funded projects and workshops. • Serves as headquarters liaison and member of an ad hoc publications committee, appointed by the Executive Director, that addresses policies for all ASEE policies • Attends public meetings of various interest groups, coalitions, etc. in order to develop news material for Capitol Shorts. • Assists the Director of External Affairs in developing policy positions and correspondence. • Other duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE: • BA in liberal arts, social sciences, or related degree. MA preferred. • 10-plus years of journalism experience. • Experience with engineering, engineering education, or higher education preferred. • Experience in reporting and editing for a major newspaper or news magazine desired. Experience managing a talented team.
