The American Fraternal Alliance has a new opportunity for an Advocacy & Membership Manager. This entry-to-mid level position reports directly to the Chicago-based CEO and will play a key role in helping transform ideas into action by working with staff, volunteers and consultants to develop and execute advocacy activities and membership programs.
The Alliance promotes and supports the missions of its 50+ member societies that offer life insurance and other benefits in the US and Canada. Fraternal benefit societies are a different kind of life insurance provider: they secure members’ futures and give back to their local communities through meaningful volunteer activities at the chapter level. Alliance member societies represent nearly eight million individuals, making it one of America’s largest member-based volunteer networks.
Essential functions of the position include:
Works with CEO and volunteer groups to track issues and build a network of supporters - particularly in states with a large member presence.
Initiates extensive outreach to chapter leaders and industry champions.
Responsible for keeping CEO and members informed of activities on state advocacy.
Assists CEO in the representation of members’ interests and in conjunction with a variety of member and industry groups through calls and meetings and the production of related materials.
Develops and maintains professional relationships with members through proactive outreach.
Designs and produces educational content for events in collaboration with CEO and association management company (AMC) team to identify appropriate topics and speakers.
Works with AMC staff to execute meetings and events. Includes registration system management and activity, prioritizing program content for marketing, organizing sponsor processes, script production, onsite management, and evaluation deployment.
Ensures the integrity of member financial data and chapter data.
Serves as liaison to multiple committees and task forces related to member benefits to plan and lead calls, and to create and distribute meeting minutes.
Bachelor’s degree required - degree in Political Science, Public Relations, or related field preferred.
3+ of experience working in state or federal advocacy, public affairs, or association management.
Familiarity with federal and state legislative procedures and standard communication etiquette with elected officials and legislative staff.
Strong interest in non-profits, volunteerism, and community service.
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Ability to travel as much as 25% of the time during peak periods (January to June).
Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.
