The Dermatology Foundation (DF), established in 1964, is the largest private source for medical research funding in dermatology. Located in Evanston, IL this 501(c)3 member-based professional organization serves dermatologists throughout the United States. The DF’s mission is to provide research funding that develops and retains future academics and researchers in dermatology, enabling advancements in patient care. The DF’s prestigious research awards are highly competitive and are bestowed to new physician scientists and investigators who can make major contributions to the scientific and academic base of the specialty.
The DF maintains a crucial role in the ongoing advancement of the specialty. The results of the Dermatology Foundation's work are profound and its reputation strong. For over 50 years, it has supported nearly 2,000 physician scientists and investigators who have contributed new knowledge and therapies for dermatology—benefiting patients everywhere.
Following the retirement of a long-serving leader and under the leadership of a new Executive Director, the Dermatology Foundation is poised to enter a new era and address the needs and expectations of a diverse professional field of supporters whose delivery of services and communication styles are rapidly evolving. The DF’s vision for addressing changes in the behavior of dermatologists and in healthcare is critical to the organization’s ongoing success.
Financial contributions for the DF’s mission are realized from member dermatologists, corporate supporters and specialty societies. These constituencies recognize the Foundation as the expert in assessing the specialty’s research and academic needs/gaps and rely on the DF to identify and support future leaders in the field who will move dermatology forward and improve patient care.
The Dermatology Foundation has annual revenues of $6.3M and a total portfolio of $47M, and is governed by a dedicated volunteer Board of 37 and an Executive Committee of 13.
The Director of Development is a key member of the senior leadership team. Reporting to the Executive Director and working in close collaboration with the Deputy Executive Director, the Director of Development will elaborate in conjunction with the leadership team and committee members a consensus-based strategy to enhance and strengthen philanthropy efforts centered on individual, annual and major gifts along with corporate and foundation support of the DF mission. The Director of Development will introduce a digital fundraising program and will establish a planned giving campaign.
The mechanisms to support these efforts include leveraging board and volunteer leaders, and creating and implementing a robust digital communications plan. Developing relationships with key constituents including current and potential dermatologists and corporate supporters across a diverse platform of industries is key. The Development Director will possess strong relationship, interpersonal and written communications skills. The Development Director will manage and oversee the current database and have knowledge of donor management systems.
Working with a small collaborative team where everyone carries a diverse portfolio, the Director of Development will be required to think strategically and implement the tactical plans that address all aspects of the development function.
The Development Director will support, enhance and ensure the success of the Executive Director as the Dermatology Foundation’s chief fundraiser.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy: In conjunction with Executive Director, develop a comprehensive annual development plan that cultivates, stewards and increases annual gifts to the Dermatology Foundation.
Implementation: Manage and implement all aspects of a consensus-based strategic initiative working directly with the Board, physicians, supporters, staff, corporations and other stakeholders
Relationship Building and Donor Recognition: Establish and manage key existing relationships and develop an outreach plan to cultivate new relationships. Oversee development activities and grow recognition programs for donors. Support the Leadership Society and Annenberg Circles-- established giving societies and recognition programs.
Communications: Develop and implement an integrated communications plan centered on a robust electronic communications strategy including digital fundraising. Create and implement all communications ensuring ongoing, targeted and effective communications and outreach to current and potential donors.
Board and Volunteer Leader Engagement: Build relationships with Board members; orientate the Board to the importance of philanthropy and fundraising and provide them with the tools to meet development objectives. Provide leadership and staff support to the Development Committee and other Board/leadership groups.
Database: Manage the current database and work with the Executive Team to suggest and implement new donor management systems, bringing experience with recognized donor software products.
Reporting: In conjunction with the Executive Director, establish ongoing performance metrics and deliver ongoing reporting.
Planned Giving: Develop a planned giving program. The Dermatology Foundation’s long standing supporters are appropriate to engage in a planned giving program and have requested the establishment of such a program. Requires knowledge of resources needed to launch.
Budgeting: Develop an annual revenue and expense budget. Monitor results and report outcomes to the Executive Director and Board.
Staff Development: Define needs and priorities and work with team to fill the open position of Development Coordinator. Implement as appropriate. Provide leadership, manage the position, and report on results.
Corporate: Manage and assist in growing the Dermatology Foundation’s relationships with industry/corporate funders.
Foundation and Grants: Coordinate and implement plans in conjunction with the Deputy Executive Director.
The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and supervises one staff member.
Five years of experience and track record of success in a senior fund development position, including planning, electronic communications/marketing, and financial management.
Healthcare experience preferred.
Demonstrated success in managing a fund development program including individual, corporate foundation and/or individual giving programs. Experience securing financial support from a variety of sources with ability to prospect, cultivate, steward and manage funding sources.
Proven track record in utilizing digital fundraising techniques as a component of the overall development plan.
Highly skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with a wide variety of internal and external constituents and building consensus among groups.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and implement an array of tasks.
Respectful and considerate of others, appreciates the value in diverse perspectives, and can elicit similar behavior from others.
Self-directed and energetic with a professional image and a demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for increasing the Foundation’s visibility on a national level.

Travel will be required. Flexible to work outside of standard business hours, as needed, including evenings and weekends.
