WHAT THE PUBLIC RELATIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR DOES
The ASPS Public Relations and Social Media Coordinator is a dynamic, energetic individual who has an interest in working with the press, loves social media and has a deep understanding of its many platforms. This role is responsible for communicating with members of the media through traditional and new media, as well as with the public and members via social platforms and encouraging greater social media participation of these audiences. The coordinator also provides analysis and support for the Communications Department, including media metrics and branding and marketing efforts of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Plastic Surgery Foundation. Duties also include implementing earned media and social media strategies, reporting on effectiveness of campaigns and staying current with public relations and social media best practices, writing/creating content based on trends and news of the specialty and providing public relations and social media support to all departments to ensure compelling messaging is distributed in a timely manner through appropriate channels.
This role requires close and frequent collaboration with various stakeholders to help translate content for traditional and social media. The ideal candidate should have a background in communications, public relations, journalism or marketing; possess strong writing skills; and have a solid understanding of and passion for social media.
Develop engaging social media content in collaboration with subject matter experts and align messaging with appropriate social media platform usingestablished guidelines and best-practices
Assist in drafting and distributing press releases, fact sheets, and other material for the media and the general public
Evaluate social media platforms and tools; measure success of social media and PR campaigns
Develop social media marketing/communications campaigns using Facebook conversion ads, targeted audiences and other tools available
Possess strong understanding of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn; Google Analytics and Google AdWords optional
Follow trends in the specialty, write brief articles and blogs based on plastic surgery topics in the popular press
Conduct research to support PR planning
Monitor social media platforms for mentions of plastic surgery-related topics and/or ASPS/PSF
Monitor ASPS/PSF social media channels for discussions and opportunties
Coordinate social media “takeovers” and other events by plastic surgeons to ensure engagement and enforce standards
Proofread collateral and assisting with the execution of Marketing and Communication Plans through basic writing support
Develop and maintain relationships with the media to help generate visibility opportunities (i.e., liaising with journalists, influencers, and other members of the media; pitching and securing media coverage)
Support special projects as assigned, including research, special creative projects and brainstorming
Coordinate interview requests, organizes press events and provides live social media coverage of select ASPS events, including industry tradeshows, educational presentations and other special events
Maintain an up-to-date press list (collecting and updating contact information of journalists and other members of the media)
Provides administrative support for the division as needed
Some travel is required (typically no more than two weeks per year)
Basic graphic design skills (Photoshop, AfterEffects) would be a plus
Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
One to three years in a marketing, communications or public relations department with strong emphasis on social media. Portfolio of samples requested for interview.
Excellent organizational and project management skills, sound understanding of the principles of digital marketing, social media platforms, new technologies – and how they can be applied to social media/communications strategies. The right candidate will also have excellent copywriting and editing skills. The ideal candidate is creative and innovative, deadline driven with strong attention to detail, dynamic and personable, a love for social media and a desire to succeed. Ability to articulate results, progress and strategy into written reports is important, as well as the ability to exude professionalism in business correspondence, including in response to members and public, internal managers and other stakeholders.
Required skills include: Excellent writing skills, project coordination, event promotion, understanding of merchandising, customer service, data entry and analysis, Ad Trafficking. Expertise in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and project management software desired; Aptify preferred.
Preferred skills include: Extreme attention to detail; professionalism; writing and proofreading skills with knowledge of AP Style; online marketing strategy, including email, Google AdWords and Google Analytics, social media; sales and marketing research. Association experience not required.
