The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), located in Alexandria, VA, is the leading organization of scientists and health care professionals committed to preventing and curing liver disease. AASLD is seeking a Director of Membership and Marketing to lead AASLD’s membership and marketing functions. This position is currently remote, with the potential for future work from home flexibility.
Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Director of Membership and Marketing is responsible for developing the strategy, planning, and organizing of the membership and marketing programs. This role uses data analytics to inform strategic approaches and refine campaigns based on performance metrics. The Director oversees the implementation of marketing, branding, and communication strategies, integrating them across AASLD and develops strategic plans to support membership retention and recruitment to drive revenue and meet AASLD business objectives.
Collaborate with senior leaders to develop and execute marketing and membership strategies that support AASLD’s strategic objectives.
Manage and develop staff members including the Senior Manager of Events, Senior Manager of Brand Development, and Manager of Membership.
Provide leadership and mentoring to all department staff.
Evaluate performance and determine work assignments, methods, and priorities in collaboration with the VP of Marketing and Communication.
Provide regular updates and discuss strategic planning ideas and opportunities with the VP of Marketing and Communications to ensure alignment of association-wide business objectives and activities.
Analyze membership data to inform strategic planning for retention and recruitment campaigns.
Develop and execute strategic plans to drive membership recruitment and retention.
Analyze membership administration practices and procedures and make recommendations for improvements.
Manage and oversee all membership administration activities.
Set annual membership retention and recruitment goals and continually evaluate campaign performance against those goals.
Conduct regular audits of member benefits and gap analyses to determine and refine the membership value proposition.
Work with the Membership and Mentorship Committee to validate membership strategies.
Collaborate with the Director of Digital Operations to ensure optimal member experiences on AASLD digital platforms.
Provide oversight of the annual membership dues renewal process.
Maintain daily awareness of AASLD’s activities and align marketing efforts to support them and ensure cross-department collaboration.
Work with the Marketing team to establish goals and key performance metrics for campaigns.
Review campaign metrics and analytics to make improvements to campaign performance.
Organize marketing department efforts and activities to reduce redundancies and one-off marketing efforts.
Develop strategic campaigns to support the Foundation and drive corporate support and sponsorships.
Identify opportunities to insert membership promotion into other marketing efforts.
Work with the Events and Brand Development teams to ensure integration of marketing
Provide recommendations for marketing opportunities to the VP of Marketing and Communications.
Develop department budgets and utilize spending authority for significant expenses.
Develop annual budget estimates and manage activities within budgeted resources.
Manage the organization’s resources within budget parameters.
Manage vendors and contracts within budget parameters.

Ability to manage multiple campaigns and analyze campaign data to optimize performance

Required Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area; or equivalent work experience in a related field
Minimum of six years of experience in a similar role with advanced subject matter expertise
Knowledge of key programmatic, operational, and financial issues and priorities
Experience and ability to develop and execute membership strategies to increase membership
Extensive knowledge of association membership processes, databases, and systems
Healthcare association membership experience and a CAE are pluses
