Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (“CFP Board”), headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the professional body for personal financial planners in the U.S. CFP Board sets standards for financial planning and administers the prestigious CFP® certification so that the public has access to and benefits from competent and ethical financial planning.
The Pro Bono Manager is instrumental in helping CFP Board achieve greater impact via its pro bono activities. The Pro Manager, along with a supervisor, will have primary responsibility for increasing each year the number of CFP® professionals who provide pro bono financial planning services. The focus of the work will be to grow the “supply” of pro bono willing CFP® professionals, while partners will take responsibility for the “demand” side by providing opportunities for them to serve underserved populations. By engaging more CFP® professionals in volunteer opportunities serving people in crisis or need, this position supports an organizational goal to expand access to competent and ethical financial planners.
The Pro Bono Manager will continually assess the tools, resources and support available to CFP® professionals so that they may have the confidence necessary to engage in pro bono initiatives. The Pro Bono Manager also will act as a strategic and thought partner to the Foundation for Financial Planning (FFP), the nation’s only 501(c)(3) nonprofit solely devoted to developing and funding pro bono financial planning programs nationwide.

• In collaboration with the vice president of public policy and other internal stakeholders, develop and execute a plan to increase annually the number of CFP® professionals engaged in pro bono services. • Coordinate with IT colleagues to maintain systems to organize, track and report the pro bono activities of CFP® professionals. • Assess and manage pro bono training resources and programs made available by partner organizations and ensure that CFP® professionals know how to access them. Recommend enhancements to training resources and programs as necessary. • Collaborate with the communications team to develop and execute plans to increase the visibility and exposure of CFP® professionals’ pro bono service. • Collaborate on the writing and production of pro bono publications, articles and marketing materials. • Organize “best practices” resources. • Stay on top of trends and innovations in the financial services industry and make recommendations on how they may be applied to strengthen pro bono financial planning. • Work collaboratively with teams across CFP Board, including policy, communications, corporate relations, registered programs and IT, as well as with outside partners at the Foundation for Financial Planning, Financial Planning Association and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. • Day-to-day responsibility for overseeing and enforcing the terms of agreements with partner organizations.
• College degree required. • 5 years of work experience with increasing responsibility. • Knowledge of the financial services industry (financial planning preferred) a plus. • Experience administering a pro bono program preferred, but not required. • Established project management skills and program design experience. Demonstrated ability to make continued progress on long-term projects. • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, paired with a service-oriented attitude. • Ability to tailor messages, understand the perspectives of others, share information readily, and listen as well as give feedback in a respectful way. • Demonstrated resourcefulness, creativity and self-directed behavior. • Knowledge and understanding of the nonprofit sector and a commitment to public service. • Ability to work closely with others with a focus on driving collaboration, operational effectiveness and excellence of work product. • Flexibility to work on special projects as assigned
