This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished association executive to serve as the Chief Operating Officer for the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), based in Washington DC. The COO will provide leadership, direction and guidance to the internal team with specific responsibilities for the day-to-day management.
IASP seeks a leader experienced in all functional areas of association management, including, membership and marketing, finance, education, event management, education, publications/content management and information technology. Because IASP is a global organization, a high degree of cultural competency and experience working with members and stakeholders around the world is preferred.
S/he will collaborate in a team environment to ensure effective service to members, volunteer leadership and key external relationships. The individual will provide ongoing support to the CEO with regard to IASP’s governance. S/he will also serve as the primary staff leader to IASP’s lived experience organization; GAPPA.
The COO will work collaboratively with the other team members to make organization-wide decisions that most effectively advance the mission and strategic direction of IASP and support the CEO. This requires the ability to think strategically, vision, cross organizational collaboration, effective team building of the staff, advancing the culture of IASP and serving as a role model for employees.
CAE (Certified Association Executive) designation required;
A minimum of 10 years of experience in association management, including significant experience in human resources, financial and fiscal responsibility or equivalent experience in other areas;
Experience in scientific/academic society;
An ability to select staff with the right talent and competencies for the positions;
Ability to delegate appropriate responsibilities in the most effective manner to achieve desired results;
Strong knowledge of IT and digital infrastructure;
Knowledge and understanding of donor, grants and sponsorship programs;
An excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing, who effectively conveys ideas;
A proficiency managing financial resources in keeping with budget objectives;
Demonstrated orientation towards excellent customer service;
Detail oriented, highly conscientious and possess a high degree of integrity while working with confidential information discreetly and appropriate;
“Can do” attitude. A strong willingness to take on new challenges, learn and grow.
