ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Executive Editor serves as the strategic and content development lead for a leading association's magazine. The executive editor will collaborate closely with internal team members and association members to determine strategic content direction for the publication as well as identifying sources for outsourced content. In addition, this position is responsible for content development as needed for various resources and communications that help advance the voice of the association’s initiatives.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops and implements the overall strategic plan for content including an annual editorial calendar. Collaborates with internal team members and leadership to ensure the content is inline with the direction of the association’s initiatives and needs of the respective industry.
- Oversees the publication’s production schedule and all timelines associated with the publication. Provides the internal team, publication designer and third-party partners with the timelines to ensure all production responsibilities are fulfilled on time.
- Responsible for creating the recommended flow sheet and layout of each issue.
- Ensures the content is delivered to the designer and the designer is part of the communication.
- Serves as the lead for identifying sources for content. This includes collaborating with the leadership and team members when there is a need to generate member sources.
- Collaborates with the sales lead to help coordinate the ad allocation for each issue and any changes that may need to be made to the flowsheet and our timeline as a result of the ad sales status. Identifies when house advertisements may be needed and coordinates with the ISPA marketing manager.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for third party contributors and the lead editor for all outsourced content.
- Identifies content to be promoted via the association’s social media platforms and coordinates directly with the marketing manager.
- Coordinates the upload of the digital magazine on the ISPA website and mobile app with the marketing manager.
- Manages the publication’s editing and review process and incorporates team members as necessary to assist with the process. Provides leadership with all feature articles to review prior to the design phase.
- Content Development
- Assists with the development of event education session topics, titles and promotional content relating to educational sessions as needed.
- Develops press releases and assists with gathering resources and preparing quotes for media inquiries as needed.
- Develops guest articles, often as a ghostwriter, for external publications as needed.
- Assists with the content creation and content review process for educational resources and toolkits.
- Assists with the preparation of scripts and talking points for leadership.
- An undergraduate degree in marketing, journalism, business or related field
- Previous experience developing content for professional organizations
- Previous project management experience involving multiple team members and deadlines
- Previous experience in content development for digital resources
- Previous experience developing professional content
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Previous experience working with third party marketing vendors and graphic designers
- Ability to develop and interpret digital marketing analytics
- Experience interviewing executive level sources
